The president watched the news reports and video clips of the Strand sightings. His daughters were fast asleep on the rug.

“His arrogance will be his downfall. Now there’s nowhere for him to run and nowhere for him to hide. It’s only a matter of time before we have you, Mr. Strand.”

The president’s wife sat quietly next to him. They had been married for over twenty years and she was watching him very closely, concerned. She decided to let him continue to vent.

“Can you image the audacity of that man to threaten the president of the United States of America?” His eyes never strayed from the TV screen.

“You’re worrying me, honey. It’s not like you to say something like that.”

The president was in no mood for comments on his behavior. “Not tonight, I don’t want to hear about it. Please, just put the girls to bed. I’ll be in shortly.”

The first lady woke up the children and then hesitated for a moment. She wanted to say something but didn’t know how to say it. She finally just turned and left the room, closing the door on her way out.

The phone rang next to the president.

“Yes? Do you have a radar lock on him? Okay. I don’t want him to get away with this, do you understand?”

The president waited for a response before slamming the phone down.

“I’m done with you, Mr. Strand,” he said out loud. “This is the last night you’ll dominate the global media. Whatever your agenda is, tonight, it’s over, one way or another.”

He sat back in his chair, confident. He had been blinded by the power of his office; he had lost perspective of his duty. He had become lost in his perception of himself.
